Professor Ali Javey received a Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Stanford University in 2005, and was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows from 2005 to 2006. He then joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley where he is currently an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. He is also a faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he serves as the program leader of Electronic Materials (E-Mat). He is an associate editor of ACS Nano. He is the co-director of Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center (BSAC), and Bay Area PV Consortium (BAPVC).

Professor Javey’s research interests encompass the fields of chemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering. His work focuses on the integration of nanoscale electronic materials for various technological applications, including novel nanoelectronics, flexible circuits and sensors, and energy generation and harvesting. For his contributions to the field, he has received numerous awards, including APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (2011); Netexplorateur of the Year Award (2011); IEEE Nanotechnology Early Career Award (2010); Alfred P. Sloan Fellow (2010); Mohr Davidow Ventures Innovators Award (2010); National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research (2009); Technology Review TR35 (2009); NSF Early CAREER Award (2008); U.S. Frontiers of Engineering by National Academy of Engineering (2008); and Peter Verhofstadt Fellowship from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (2003).

Dr. Gao Liu is a Staff Scientist and Principal Investigator in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). His research work focuses on high-energy lithium battery for transportation applications. Dr. Liu received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 2001, where he had worked on polymer materials for lithium rechargeable batteries and other energy conversion systems. Dr. Liu joined the Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies (BATT) program at LBNL as a postdoctoral fellow in 2001, and became a scientist in 2004. He has been working on electrochemical energy storage field since he came to LBNL.

I graduated in 2008 in University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, with a master degree in Physics and Material Science. I started my phd thesis in december 2008 at the Institut de Recherche et Developpement sur l’Energie Photovoltaique (IRDEP). My research topic is the elaboration of ultrathin high effficiency CIGSe solar cells. I am specialised in the elaboration of semiconductors by vacuum and electrochemical methods, along with optoelectronic characterisation of solar cells and semiconductors.

Dr. Paul Alivisatos serves as the seventh director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, succeeding Steve Chu when he was sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of Energy.

Alivisatos has led a distinguished career in chemistry and nanoscience research. He has made groundbreaking contributions to the fundamental physical chemistry of nanocrystals, including the synthesis of size and shape controlled nanoscystals, and studies of the optical, electrical, structural, and thermodynamic properties. He has demonstrated key applications of nanocrystals in biological imaging and renewable energy. He is currently the Larry and Diane Bock Professor of Nanotechnology and is a professor in the departments of materials science and chemistry at UC Berkeley. (Larry and Diane Bock are the founders and main leaders of the U.S.A. Science & Engineering Festival, held on the Mall in Washington, DC. The Kavli Foundation sponsors the Kavli Science Video Contest for this Festival.)

He is the recipient of the Linus Pauling Medal, Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award, the Eni Italgas Prize for Energy and Environment, the Rank Prize for Optoelectronics, the Wilson Prize, the Coblentz Award for Advances in Molecular Spectroscopy, the American Chemical Society Award for Colloid and Surface Science, the Von Hippel Award of the Materials Research Society and most recently Israel’s Wolf Prize in Chemistry which he shares with Charles Lieber.

He received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 1981 from the University of Chicago and Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1986.

Dr. Jordi Cabana-Jiminez is a research scientist working with the Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies (BATT) program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), which aims at the development of high-performance rechargeable batteries for use in electric vehicles (EVs) and and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs.) Prior to joining LBNL in 2008, he completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (Spain) in 2004 His thesis was entitled “Antifluorite-type Transition Metal Nitrides and Oxynitrides: Synthesis, Characterization and Application in Lithium Batteries” and was supervised by Dr. Maria Rosa Palacín. He moved to the US in 2005 to work in Prof. Clare P. Grey’s group at SUNY-Stony Brook (USA) as a postdoctoral associate.

Currently, his research aims at improving the power and energy density of electrochemical energy storage devices, both by exploring new materials and optimized microstructures, and through the study of the mechanisms that govern their performance. He has extensively used long range (X-ray and neutron diffraction) and short range (X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) characterization techniques, both in situ and ex situ, to understand the structural features of a variety of phases that includes oxides, nitrides, oxynitrides and oxysulfides. He has also applied his knowledge of solid state chemistry to the tailoring of the chemical compositions of these compounds, as well as both their structural and microstructural characteristics, in search of optimal power and energy densities.

Dr. Suresh Baskaran is the acting Chief Science and Technology Officer for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Energy and Environment Directorate, responsible for directing science and technology investments to deliver solutions for the nation’s most important energy and environment challenges. Prior to this role he managed the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) market sector, where he developed and implemented PNNL’s EERE strategy, coordinating closely with U.S. Department of Energy program managers and industry partners. As a researcher, he developed new materials for automotive, fuel cell, and microelectronic applications, and also has overseen research thrusts in hydrogen and fuel cells, and in CO₂capture and gas separations. Dr. Baskaran’s management responsibilities have ranged from planning, oversight and execution of materials and manufacturing programs, to managing a structural materials research group and leading Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) initiatives. During his research career, he co-authored 50 technical papers and 10 patents, and has been the co-recipient of an R&D 100 Award, a PNNL Director’s Award for Excellence for best research group (materials synthesis), and two awards from DOE Basic Energy Sciences for Significant Implications of DOE Research. He was also part of a laboratory-industry team that developed novel automotive spark plug resistors and transitioned this technology to manufacturing. Prior to joining PNNL, he worked at Ferro Corporation and at the University of Michigan. A materials scientist by training, Dr. Baskaran received his degrees from Indian Institute of Technology-Chennai, Virginia Tech, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Henri Mariette graduated from the french engineering School ESPCI-Paristech. He started his research in the field of semiconductor physics, and got his PhD from the Université Paris VI in 1981 on « Band structure and disorder effects in III-V semiconductors alloys layers prepared by epitaxy”. As postdoctoral years, he spent one year at the Max Planck Institut for solid state physics in Stuttgart (Germany), and then two years with IBM in San José (California) and Yorktown –Heights (New-York). In 1986, he became a CNRS researcher at the Laboratoire de Spectrométrie Physique, University of Grenoble-France, before to joint the CEA-CNRS group “Nanophysique et Semiconducteurs” in Grenoble. He works there on the growth by molecular beam epitaxy of II-VI and III-V semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures exhibiting specific properties: particularly photonic source with quantum dots, and diluted magnetic semiconductors. Recently he started to study semiconductor nanostructures with type-II band alignment for photovoltaics

Since 2005, he is the head of the CEA-CNRS group in Grenoble. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles. He is teaching at the university J. Fourier (Grenoble) and advised 15 PhD thesis.

Speaker on Energy Storage: Marie Kerlau, Leyden Energy

Marie Kerlau is Research Manager at Leyden Energy. In this capacity, she is responsible for developing high-energy density Li-ion batteries. She has over 10 years of experience in R&D in the fields of lithium-ion batteries and semiconductor sensors. From 2004 to 2006, she led research efforts at LBNL and UC Berkeley on lithium-ion batteries for new generation of hybrid electric vehicles as part of the BATT program. Marie Kerlau earned her PhD degree in Materials Science in 2003 from Rennes University, France and graduated from North Carolina State University in May 2009 with an MBA focused on Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization. Upon completion of her MBA she co-founded a Li-ion battery start up to develop high-capacity silicon composite electrode.

Speaker on Thermoelectricity: Shannon Yee

Shannon Yee is a PhD Candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the University of California Berkeley working on developing novel thermoelectric materials by leveraging recent scientific discoveries at nanoscale organic-inorganic interfaces. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 and his M.S. in Nuclear Engineering in 2008 from The Ohio State University. In 2007, he was named a U.S. DOE Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) Fellow for his work on nuclear fuel cycle dynamics. In 2008, he was named a Hertz Foundation Fellow to support his PhD in developing the next generation of energy technologies. In 2010, Shannon was named the first U.S. DOE Advanced Research Project Agency Energy (ARPA-E) Fellow where he helped to shape ARPA-E during its inaugural year.

Keynote speaker: Graham Fleming, Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Berkeley

Graham Fleming, Melvin Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, currently serves as UC Berkeley’s Vice Chancellor for Research, a position which he assumed in April 2009. Fleming also served as the Deputy Director of the Berkeley Lab from 2005-2007.

Through joint appointments as Melvin Calvin Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UC Berkeley, and Founding Director of both the Berkeley Lab’s Physical Biosciences Division and UC Berkeley’s California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3), he has re-shaped the intersection of physical and biological sciences, while maintaining his own investigations into ultrafast chemical and biological processes, in particular, the primary steps of photosynthesis

Throughout his administrative career, Fleming has remained a highly active scientific researcher. He has authored or co-authored more than 450 publications, and is widely considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on ultrafast processes. Fleming has given numerous talks around the world on the inter-relation and inter-complexity of energy, climate and photosynthesis. At present, Graham Fleming is engaged in coordinating energy and climate research at Berkeley.

Panelist on technology transfer: Alexei Andreev

Alexei Andreev has served as an Executive Vice President and as a Managing Director of Harris & Harris Group since March 2005. From 2002 to March 2005, he was an Associate with Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), a venture capital firm, where he was exclusively focused on nanotechnology and material science investment opportunities. While at DFJ, he played an integral role in sourcing and funding EoPlex, Intematix, Solicore and D-Wave Systems, for which companies he served as an active Board Director or Observer. Previously, he worked for TLcom Capital Partners, a London-based venture capital fund backed by Morgan Stanley. Prior to that, he was employed by Renaissance Capital Group/Sputnik Funds, a venture capital fund in Moscow, Russia. Before he started his business career, he was a researcher at the Centre of Nanotechnology, ISAN (RAS), in Troitsk, Russia, where he was focused on optical and electrical properties of Quantum Dot heterostructures. He was graduated from the Department of Theoretical Physics of Moscow Steel & Alloys Institute (Ph.D.), where he was a recipient of the Scholarship for Outstanding Young Scientists of Russian Academia of Sciences, the Scholarship from the International Center of Fundamental Physics and Soros Scientific Foundation. He also was graduated from Moscow Steel & Alloys Institute (B.S.) with honors in Engineering/Material Sciences and from Stanford Graduate School of Business (M.B.A.).

Roberta Poloni earned her B.Sc. in physics from the University of Camerino (Italy) and her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Lyon 1 (France) in 2007 where she studied the structural and electronic properties of intercalated fullerenes under extreme conditions. Afterwards, she spent two years at the Insituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB) as a postdoctoral associate, working on the development of a first-principles method to determine the atomic structure of crystals with substitutional disorder (solid solutions and alloys). She is currently a postdoctoral associate at the University of California at Berkeley and the Molecular Foundry (LBNL) working on the engineering of new materials (mainly metal-organic frameworks) for carbon capture, by using computational methods.

Panelist on Technology Transfer: Paul Fox

Paul Fox is a Partner at the CalCEF Angel Fund, a seed and early stage investor in clean energy based in San Francisco. He is a green-tech veteran, having worked as an engineer, strategy consultant, and CEO of several start-ups.

The Fund’s mission is to close the early-stage funding gap while delivering attractive returns to Limited Partners. Deeply connected in California’s clean energy community, and with an experienced green-tech team, the CalCEF Angel fund applies institutional disciplines to early stage investing, while providing a unique level of transparency and participation for Limited Partners.

Paul was previously the founder of tech2mkt, a technology commercialization firm, which helped launch several cleantech companies, including solar components, water treatment, solar financing, sensor networks, energy storage and green buildings. Prior to that, Paul was founding CEO of SC Power Systems, a smart grid hardware company, now listed on the AIM as Zenergy (ZEN). Under Paul’s leadership, the company developed a product, secured utility pilots, acquired a company in Germany, and raised money from investors in Europe.

In other roles, Paul was a VP at Flextronics; the CEO of a fuel cell company; built the first mobile phones in Hungary; was a strategy consultant during the de-regulation of the Australian electricity markets; and was national operations manager for one of Australia’s largest construction organizations.

Paul began his career building water and power systems in remote localities, winning kudos from the United Nations and Government of Papua New Guinea. He also invented and deployed a hydro-pneumatic pile driving system for use in wetlands.

Paul has an MBA from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma from the University of Queensland, and a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours from the University of New South Wales. Paul enjoys travelling and spending time with his young family. He teaches Judo and also holds a black belt in Kung Fu and Tai Chi.

Vincent Giordani received his M. Sc. degree in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion from the Universities of Warsaw, Cordoba, Amiens, Toulouse and Aix-Marseille (ALISTORE-ERI network of excellence for advanced energy storage systems) in 2007, and completed his PhD in materials science at Laboratoire de Réactivité et de Chimie des Solides (Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens) and the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) under the direction of Prof. P. Bruce and Prof. J-M. Tarascon in 2010. He then joined Liox Power, Inc. in Pasadena, CA as a senior scientist to pursue his research on Lithium batteries. His current research interest is related to fundamental R&D toward achieving a battery suitable for long range fully electric vehicles and more specifically the development of rechargeable lithium-air battery systems.

José Alvarez received the MSc degree in microelectronic from the University Denis Diderot of Paris in 2000 and the PhD degree from the University Pierre et Marie Curie of Paris, France in 2004. From March 2004 to September 2005, he joined the International Center for Young Scientist (ICYS) at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan. Since October 2005, he has been working as a research associate at the Laboratoire de Génie Électrique de Paris from the french Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) on optical, electrical characterization and optimization of semiconductor materials and devices. His current fields of interests are silicon-based structures, diamond semiconductor material and III-V materials.

Alex Fernandez-Martinez received his Ph.D. from the University Joseph-Fourier in Grenoble, France. His Ph.D. thesis was focused on the structure an reactivity of poorly crystalline minerals and their anion retention capability in different environments such as volcanic soils or acid mine drainage affected sites. He performed part of his Ph.D. at the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France) where, prior to his Ph.D., he had used neutron scattering techniques to the study of amorphous and nanocrystalline materials. During his postdoctoral work at the Energy Frontiers Research Center for Nanoscale Control of Geologic CO2 (LBNL, Berkeley, USA), he performed studies on the thermodynamics of carbonate mineral nucleation, amorphous carbonate minerals and on diverse nucleation pathways relevant for CO2 seqauestration mechanisms. Alex is currently a staff scientist at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre (CNRS, Grenoble), and keeps and an active collaboration at the Energy Frontiers Research Center for Nanoscale Control of Geologic CO2 at the LBNL (Berkeley, USA).

Dr. Fabrice ODOBEL is a Chemical Engineer from “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille” (Diploma in 1990). He obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry under the direction of Prof. Jean-Pierre SAUVAGE in 1993 at the University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg (FRANCE). The research topic concerned the synthesis of a modular approach of porphyrin arrays for photoinduced electron transfer. In 1993-1994, he spent one year at Columbia University as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Ronald BRESLOW in New York city (USA). He worked in the field of artificial enzymes and the research project aimed at designing cyclodextrine derivatives for the selective cleavage of a peptide sequence.

Pierre Darancet is a postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, working in the group of Dr. Jeffrey B. Neaton. He received the Ph.D. in 2008, from the University Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France. His Ph.D. thesis was focused on the theory and modeling of quantum transport in nanostructures, under the supervision of Dr. Didier Mayou and Dr. Valerio Olevano. In the last 3 years, his postdoctoral work in Berkeley –funded by the Helios project—has focused on the fundamental understanding of energy transport and energy conversion at nanoscale interfaces.

Chloé Thieuleux earned her M.Sc. in chemistry from the “Ecole supérieure de Chimie de Lille” (France) and her Ph.D. from the University of Montpellier (France). She joined the Surface OrganoMetallic Chemistry (SOMC) laboratory (Lyon, France) and then the “Anorganisch Chemisches Institut” in TU Munich (Garching, Germany) for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship. She is currently a confirmed CNRS researcher in the field of catalysis and materials chemistry and is the scientific-in-charge of the “Advanced Functionnalized Nanomaterials and Materials” research group within the SOMC team in the laboratory of Chemistry, Catalysis, Polymers and Processes (LC2P2) headed by Prof. B. Charleux. Her current research interests are the design of tailored functionnalized materials containing organometallic complexes or metallic nanoparticles for a wide range of catalytic reactions (Olefin metathesis, alkane and CO₂ activations, hydrogenations…). From her core-competences dealing with catalysis and material/surface chemistries, she recently implemented her known-how to the development of smart materials for microelectronics or optics in collaboration with the “Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives” (CEA Grenoble) and the “Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon” (ENS Lyon). Chloé Thieuleux is co-author of 40 peer-reviewed articles and patents.

Louis Grenet was born in 1982 in France. He graduated in 2005 from “L’école des Mines de Paris” with a major in nuclear engineering. In 2010, he obtained his PhD in physics from the Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble under the direction of M. Jamet. His doctoral work focused on spin injection and transport from ferromagnetic electrode to semiconductor materials. After one year of post-doctoral position, he is now a permanent scientist at Liten/CEA-Grenoble. His research interests are new materials for thin-film photovoltaic applications and especially CZTS and CZTSSe based solar cells.

Maryline Guilloux-Viry received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Rennes, France, in 1991. Her PhD was focused on YBCO high Tc superconductor epitaxial thin films. She was researcher at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) from 1991 to 2005 at Laboratoire de Chimie du Solide et Inorganique Moléculaire, from University of Rennes 1. She was nominated as Full Professor in 2005 at Rennes Chemical Sciences Institute (ISCR), UMR 6226 CNRS – University of Rennes 1. She is now director of the group “Solid State Chemistry and Materials”. Her main research field concerns synthesis and characterization of thin films, especially epitaxial growth (by pulsed laser deposition and sputtering) and characterization of thin films and heterostructures of various materials, mainly: ferroelectric oxides, molybdenum cluster sulfides, and metals. These developments are aimed essentially at integration in devices (microelectronics, sensors…). She is co-author of about 150 papers in the field of thin films.

Panelist on “Nanotechnologies, sustainable and green”: Sylvain Costes

Sylvain Costes obtained his engineering degree in Physics from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Grenoble, France in 1994 and his Ph.D. in nuclear Engineering in 1999 from the University of California at Berkeley. One common theme in his work has been to weight the benefits and health hazards associated with ionizing radiation. After a brief postdoc in the Math department at UCB where he modeled the impact of ionizing radiation on DNA, he spent 3 years as a staff scientist at the National Cancer Institute where he learned state of the art microscopy techniques and image analysis for life sciences projects. Dr. Costes has commercialized imaging products that are now being used worldwide. He has been a principal investigator at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2008. His lab has been focusing on integrating high throughput fluorescent microscopy with sophisticated image analysis to unravel novel biological processes following exposure to ionizing radiation. Dr. Costes was recently elected as the Radiation Research Society Physics Councilor, and his work challenging the current models of radiation health risk has been discussed in mainstream journals such as “Le Monde” in France.

He will discuss how computer models and quantitative biology could be used to assess the health risk of emerging nanotechnologies.
